Whether you need more space for items that are taking up room in your home or you need a space to store a vehicle, there are benefits of building a garage. A one car garage can be designed in numerous ways depending on the space you have next to the house and the function that you desire from the garage. Before beginning the construction of your garage, take some time to create a plan so that you know what materials you need to get and the size that you need to build based on the size of the vehicle.

Attaching To The Home

One of the things that you need to decide before building is whether you want to build the garage attached to the home or detached. If it’s attached, then you need to think about the structure and support of the wall of the home where the garage will be built. On the other hand, a detached garage offers a few benefits because you can build it in an area where you can create a driveway or where you can create a pathway from the home to the building. Try to use the same materials on the exterior of the garage that are used on the exterior of the home so that everything matches.

Entry Ways

Most garages are built so that the door is easy to access from the street as you pull in the driveway. If the garage is attached to the home, then you would need to create an entry door that is convenient to a room in the home. Most garages lead to the kitchen or the laundry room as these have floors that are easier to clean after getting in and out of the car. Most of the time, you’re going to use the entry door to get to the garage instead of the larger garage door while using the main door for getting the vehicle in and out.

Inside Design

The inside of the garage is just as important as the outside. Consider adding shelves on one side to store boxes and equipment that you might need to work on your vehicle. Cabinets are also an idea to include on the inside. If you plan to use the garage more for storage of household items instead of the vehicle, then you might want to consider installing a vent so that the space doesn’t get too cold or hot.

Further Additions

If you plan to add anything else to the garage in the future, you need to allow for enough space for this kind of project. An example would be turning the garage into one that is large enough for two vehicles. You also need to think about whether you need stairs in the garage or if there would be a possibility of adding an apartment above it for a teenager or family member. These are considerations to keep in mind so that you don’t take up too much room when you begin your building project.
